New approach to office working proves a winner for William Hill

William Hill were keen to bring together elements of their business from disparate locations around London and co-locate into a new environment in Central London where they could set out a vision for the next chapter in the history of this well-established household name.

Modus worked closely with the William Hill property team and Penn Partnership – their consultants – in reviewing shortlisted buildings and testing the initial client brief. The selected building at the Avenue Tottenham Court Road was well known to Modus as we had recently completed the new Skyscanner offices on the upper floors.

The new space is radically different from any previous William Hill office – there are no private offices – and everyone from the CEO down sits open plan on the same size desk. A key component of the design is the variety and number of different types of meeting spaces and collaboration areas – from formal meeting rooms to stand up benches, diner booths and soft seating areas. There is also a large staff breakout area which doubles as internal meeting space.

The heart of the design is a generously sized flexible meeting area focused around a new interconnecting staircase which links together the two principal working floors. The structural opening for the staircase was deliberately oversized to allow a greater scene of visual connection between the two levels.
This space features sliding screens which can be used to divide and define areas depending on the use of the space. It is also used for town hall meetings – there is tiered seating around the base of the staircase – and here the company presentations are filmed and sent to other William Hill offices around the world.
