Culture Day celebrations for a great cause!
At Modus, we are huge advocates of our team supporting initiatives, charities and social causes that are close to their hearts. On the 9th of December, we will be getting together as a team to raise money for Happy Kids Promising Purpose, a charity founded by Alexis Romeo, one of our talented Designers. We spoke with Alexis on her plans for the future of the charity and some exciting Christmas campaigns she has coming up.
Who are Happy Kids?
Happy Kids is a not-for-profit that supports orphans in Nigeria. Our main purpose is really to make these children feel supported, that their past doesn’t define their future. We are committed to brightening up the lives of these children who have already dealt with so much loss at such a young age.
What made you create this charity?
I first came up with the idea when I was (shamelessly!) complaining about not having enough Christmas presents, then on one of my annual trips home to Nigeria, I decided to visit one of the local orphanages. After meeting the children, most of whom had lost both parents, I instantly knew I wanted to help them. It totally and completely changed my mindset; I knew I wanted to help make a difference in their lives and give back. Now I visit them as often as I can and throw a big annual Christmas party, obviously with lots of presents!
Who else is involved in the charity?
I am lucky enough to have lots of family and friends who are always up for lending a hand and getting involved, that makes a huge difference. My colleagues are also some of our biggest supporters. The Workplace Futures Group have an amazing matching scheme, so whatever funds we raise, the company matches it!
How long has the charity been running for?
We are now in our 5th year running since my very first visit to the orphanages, it has been quite a journey and we are still as committed as ever to raising money for things like school fees, food and other general everyday necessities. More recently, in the past three years, we have been supporting orphanages in Lagos, Nigeria by throwing our annual Christmas Funfair parties, it's their chance to experience Christmas and have some fun!
What are your plans for the future?
There is so much that I want to accomplish! My main goals are to continue to raise awareness and of course funding and who knows, maybe one day set up a Happy Kids Centre to help reach those goals, education and further mental health support.
This year, Happy Kids Promising Purpose Funfair event will be held on Friday 27th of December 2019 at Upbeat Recreational Centre, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
