Projection Mapping – The Future of Design
Last week, our design team had the opportunity to visit the Lighthouse in King’s Cross to attend the David Hockney: Bigger & Closer exhibition. David Hockney is a celebrated artist who significantly contributed to the pop art movement during the 60s. Through projection mapping techniques, the ‘Bigger & Closer’ exhibition allowed our designers to experience some of Hockney’s most iconic pieces through a new lens. The specialist software used maps of both 2D and 3D objects, creating a virtual environment that emulates the world within.
Unlike a typical movie theatre, the immersive exhibition fills five out of the six surfaces in the room, surrounding the audience with high-impact visuals, transporting them to another world. In an interview with Forbes, Richard Slaney, CEO of Lightroom, explained that the room had a total of 28 Panasonic 4K projectors surrounding it. The long walls display an 8K image, while the shorter walls display a 5K image. The exhibition was a visual feast for the senses, leaving our design team feeling inspired and energised by the innovative use of technology in art.
What is projection mapping?
Projection mapping is a technique that uses one or more projectors to display videos or images onto buildings or objects instead of a flat white screen, turning them into interactive displays. A more technical definition of projection mapping is “the display of an image on a non-flat or non-white surface” (Projection Mapping Central).
Projection mapping is a cutting-edge technology that takes the concept of projection to a whole new level. It involves projecting images or videos onto surfaces of various sizes and shapes, creating high-impact visual effects, and transforming ordinary objects into captivating displays. Projection mapping allows you to convert any surface into a dynamic canvas, creating immersive and interactive experiences that leave a lasting impression. Effective use of this technology can allow for the creation of 3D illusions, which amplify the experience of depth and movement on flat surfaces. Considered design techniques can also add texture and pattern, further enhancing the visual experience.
